People can’t stop talking about the new Barbie movie directed by Greta Gerwig. It’s hitting theaters on July 21, 2023, and has a big-name cast, including Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Will Ferrell. Simu Liu is also in the movie, but not everyone’s excited about that.
One user said,
“There needs to be a version of barbie where simu liu is censored throughout the movie.”
Another user said,
“What keeps me from watching the Barbie movie? Simu Liu being homophobic and racist. (Kinda ironic that he is in the movie, now that I think about it.) Issue na niya ‘to when Shang-Chi was shown, pero walang public outcry as opposed to other actors who are the same as him????”
The Shang-Chi actor got into trouble in 2021 when fans discovered he had supposedly made some controversial comments in the past. What exactly did Simu say? We’ll break it down for you.
Simu Liu Controversy
In September 2021, some people on Twitter said Simu had issues when old Reddit posts from 2015 linked to him showed up with controversial stuff.
It seems Simu used to be on Reddit from 2013 to 2015 with the username /u/nippedinthebud. He was said to visit the “Men’s Rights Asians” subreddit, known for harassing Asian women and expressing racist and anti-Black views.
Even though the account /u/nippedinthebud has been deleted, screenshots showing troubling comments from this user are causing a lot of anger online.
tldr for those who dont know why everyone hates this casting: simu liu’s old reddit got exposed where he likened being gay to being a pedophile, and made a bunch of racist, anti-black comments. you can google to find articles on it, just search his name + reddit/racist https://t.co/US6Xng5uUc

In a single picture, /u/nippedinthebud said that pedophilia and homosexuality are connected. /u/nippedinthebud stated:
“From a biological standpoint, it’s no different than being gay — a small mutation in the genome that defines our sexual preferences. Depending on what area of the world you were born and what time, it also may have been a perfectly acceptable thing to act on those urges. Now we all lknow that taking advantage of minors is wrong.”

Since Simu’s name wasn’t directly on the account, people are wondering if he was the one using the username /u/nippedinthebud. However, the hints strongly suggest it was him.
In one post, /u/nippedinthebud called himself a Canadian actor, and in another, he said, “Hey it’s Simu” and thanked fans for watching Kim’s Convenience, a show Simu was in from 2016 to 2015.
Even though Simu never admitted to owning the account or the comments linked to it, he did say something mysterious about all the talk surrounding it. In 2021, he mentioned,
“Twitter is a slanderous place sometimes, and it feels good to shut down trolls and bad faith actors who want to drag your name through the mud.”
Some people are mad because he didn’t say sorry for real. On the other hand, some folks don’t get why everyone is so upset about what Simu is said to have commented. According to a Twitter user’s opinion,
“As a literate, gay man…i can say there is absolutely nothing wrong with what he is saying. He is making the point that a pedophilia is not taught or learned, it is something as instinctual and born into as homosexuality is.”
