Stories, settings, battles and anything else along these words may all be found in plenty in the world of anime. Nonetheless, while discussing the wonderful aspects of anime, the designs of the series’ characters are always mentioned first.
Characters in anime are typically very distinct and visually arresting making them easy to remember for all the right reasons. That’s why a few of the characters in any given program are surefire stars just by virtue of how strikingly they’re designed.
10 Most Unique Anime Character Designs Of All Time
The creative drive behind most anime ensures that viewers will be treated to jaw-dropping visuals and unforgettable characters. It’s obvious that a lot of time and care was put into designing these characters since even the smallest details stand out in their own special ways.
The following characters stand out for their originality among the abundance of stunning visuals available. This list has been expanded to include more characters from programs of varying genres to better reflect the great variety of anime art styles and character designs now available.
Akira (Devilman Crybaby)
There are far worse things people can watch than Devilman Crybaby. The show explores the evil side of humanity and doesn’t hold back when portraying how nasty life can go.
Akira, the show’s protagonist, demonstrates that his morals are much clearer than those of the average people around him. Despite the excellence of his character design, the progression of his story throughout the series is deeply tragic.
Shoto Todoroki (My Hero Academia)
The fantastic superhero themes are woven together in a new and fascinating way in the anime My Hero Academia. Due to the flamboyance of the show’s characters, there are a number of strong contenders for the title of best-designed character.
However, Shoto stands apart from the rest. The ideal offspring that Endeavor worked so hard to “produce” is visually striking in his simplicity.
Yusuke’s Demonic Form (Yu Yu Hakusho)
Famous for depicting Yusuke Urameshi’s journey from the afterlife to the role of Spirit Detective, Yu Yu Hakusho is a landmark anime series. Though the series’ last arc may be its weakest, overall it’s a good watch.
Yusuke’s development into a more interesting character is undeniably the show’s most fascinating aspect. It’s a shame that the protagonist’s demonic form which involves him or her channeling Raizen’s powers to transform into a demonic being wasn’t given more attention following its reveal because it’s truly amazing to watch.
Saber (Fate/Stay Night)
The popular Fate/Stay Night video game inspired the accompanying anime series. Shirou Emiya was thrown into the Fifth Holy Grail War and nearly killed during these battles in the first anime to come out for the series.
But then his servant Saber showed there and everything changed. The way her friendship with Shirou blossomed was touching and her design made it apparent that she was not someone to mess with.

Super Saiyans (Dragon Ball)
As a genre, shonen shows like Dragon Ball are legendary and Dragon Ball Z is often regarded as the series’ pinnacle. It never gets old to see Goku and his buddies take on impossible odds and emerge victorious.
Goku’s battle against Frieza in which the Saiyan reached a new level of power after witnessing Krillin’s death is widely regarded as one of the series’ best confrontations. The famous appearance of the Super Saiyan in the series marked a moment of pure, unadulterated ecstasy.
Ryuk (Death Note)
Among all shonen anime, Death Note is undoubtedly among the most famous. Light and L’s intellectual duel is a piece of beauty that never fails to impress.
The show’s shinigami are a big part of what makes it so great, though. Most people can’t get enough of Ryuk’s great character and nasty demeanor because of how strikingly designed he is.
Naruto During The Pain Arc (Naruto)
Although Naruto’s design was exceptional when he was young, his appearance eventually declined as he matured. The introduction of Naruto’s new clothes in the Pain arc, however, fixed this little problem.
With hues never before worn by the ninja, Naruto’s new outfit was a thing of beauty. This, along with the amazing scroll slung over his back made him one of the most attractive characters in the best Naruto arc ever.
Elias Ainsworth (The Magician’s Bride)
The Ancient Magus’ Bride is a great example of a book with a wild and intriguing character design. Everyone’s attention will naturally be drawn to one certain character and that person is easy to guess.
Like his unusual appearance, Elias Ainsworth comes from unknown beginnings. He’s got the head of a wolf and the horns of a goat and he’s one of the show’s most interesting and entertaining characters.

Iyami (Mr. Osomatsu)
A comedy series that will make everyone giggle, Mr. Osomatsu is a pretty odd show that might serve as a break from the regular grittiness of popular anime. It’s difficult to choose a favorite among the many characters who all have great designs.
With his unique character shining through his appearance, Iyami is a fantastic choice. He’s a humorous antagonist who looks horrible and fits the part wonderfully.
Shigeru Akagi (Akagi)
Akagi does a wonderful job of bringing to life the thought that someone would gamble their very life. Both the story and the visuals in this show are excellent making it a must-watch for any fan of thriller anime.
Primary character Shigeru Akagi’s striking and unusual appearance is consistent with his reputation as a superb gambler who isn’t afraid to risk it all. To say he’s a fantastic addition to this excellent program would be an understatement.
