In the case of Alfonso Rodriguez, Jr., U.S. Attorney Mac Schneider claims he has been instructed to withdraw the notice of intent to seek a death sentence.
After this order, on Tuesday, March 14, the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of North Dakota filed a withdrawal notice, stating that the United States will no longer seek the death penalty in this case.
“The directive to withdraw the death notice has changed how the United States Attorney’s Office will proceed with this case. What will not change is that Mr. Rodriguez will draw his last breath in a federal prison,”
He continued:
“My thoughts today are with Dru Sjodin’s family, particularly her parents, Linda Walker and Allan Sjodin”. “They are genuinely good people and loving parents who in the wake of an unimaginable loss have worked closely with our office for nearly twenty years. We continue to wish them the greatest measure of peace possible.”
“I also want to commend the trial team, including former United States Attorney Drew Wrigley, as well as our office’s appellate attorneys and support staff”.
Through their work on this tragic case over the past two decades, they have consistently upheld the high standards of the Department of Justice. Because of their efforts, Mr. Rodriguez was found guilty of murder and will remain in prison for the rest of his life.
When he kidnapped Dru Sjodin, a student at the University of North Dakota, from a Grand Forks shopping mall in 2003, the Crookston man was already on probation for a Level 3 s*x offense. Rodriguez’s 23-year prison sentence had ended six months before Sjodin vanished, and he had been released from prison.
The body was discovered by locals in a field outside of Crookston, where he had murdered her. Sjodin’s disappearance prompted days of extensive searches, altered how Minnesota dealt with s*x offenders and inspired the National S*x Offender Registry to be renamed in her honor.
In 2006, Rodriguez, Jr. was found guilty of kidnapping and murdering Sjodin. This 22-year-old man was originally from Pequot Lakes, Minnesota.
