What is the Relation of Rupaul With the Transgender Community?
Multiple scandals have surrounded RuPaul because of his transphobic remarks and behaviour. According to the reports, his relationship with the trans community is tense because of their apparent inability to reconcile their divergent worldviews.
While he uses drag to poke fun at gender and identity norms, he believes that the trans community takes identity too seriously. Sonique, Carmen Carrera, Jiggly Caliente, Monica Beverly Hillz, Kenya Michaels and Gia Gunn are just a few of the trans women who have competed on RuPaul’s Drag Race and openly discussed their trans identity.
As the show progressed into later seasons, transgender contestants began to appear. Peppermint made history in 2017 as the first openly transgender female contestant and Gottmik made history in 2021 as the first openly transgender male.
RuPaul blasted the censors for their bad-faith efforts and clarified that the term tranny included all transgender people, not just trans women. In an interview with The Guardian published in 2018, RuPaul said that a transgender woman who had already undergone her transition (like Peppermint) “probably not” be accepted onto the show.
After receiving backlash on social media and from former contestants, RuPaul made a comparison between transgender drag queens who have transitioned and athletes who have used performance-enhancing drugs which drew further criticism.
