He was widely recognized for his contributions to the popular television show MythBusters where he designed and built numerous robots and specialized in operating computers and electronics to test urban legends.
Early in his career, Imahara worked for Lucasfilm in both the engineering department at THX and the visual effects department at Industrial Light & Magic. His contributions can be seen in movies from Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Matrix and Terminator series among many others.
His first foray into the world of television was on the robot combat series BattleBots where he first designed and competed with his robot Deadblow and then returned as a judge. Imahara also worked as Industrial Light & Magic’s head modelmaker on films like Galaxy Quest.

Grant Imahara died on July 13, 2020. After a ruptured undiagnosed intracranial aneurysm, Imahara passed away on July 13, 2020 at the age of 49. So for two days both the Discovery Channel and the Science Channel aired back-to-back marathons in Imahara’s honor starting with a collection of MythBusters episodes and ending with the White Rabbit Project episode “May G Force Be with You” which Imahara hosted.
On what would have been his 50th birthday, October 23, 2020 his mother, colleagues and friends announced the establishment of the Grant Imahara STEAM Foundation including Mythbusters castmates Kari Byron, Tory Belleci and Adam Savage.

Matthew Mercer, the DM of the D&D web series Critical Role pays tribute to Imahara by creating an NPC named Imahara Joe. Joe Imahara is a tinker who aids the protagonists in achieving their objectives with the aid of mechanical automaton motorcycles he designs and builds. As Mercer put it one of the most lovely people I have ever known was Imahara.
