The anime version of the popular Korean webcomic Lookism is currently in the works. During Netflix’s event, it was revealed that the anime series Lookism would premiere on the service on November 4. South Korean studio Studio Mir, known for their work on The Legend of Korra, Voltron: Legendary Defender, and Dota: Dragon’s Blood, will be producing the anime. The teaser, featuring a clip of the opening song by the eight-member South Korean boy group ATEEZ, is available on Netflix’s official YouTube page.
There has been a long tradition of anime adaptations of Korean webcomics, and Lookism is the latest in that tradition. Only a few adaptations have made their debut in the previous two years, including Tower of God, Noblesse, and God of High School. The Lookism series on Netflix isn’t the first time the book has been turned into a screen version. A Chinese film studio created a real-life adaptation of the webcomic in 2019. The 38-episode drama retains the original’s core premise but deviates significantly from its plot.
Studio Mir’s First Attempt at Adapting a Korean Webtoon Lookism
Studio Mir was established in 2010 by Yu Jae-Myung, the man responsible for the animation of Avatar: The Last Airbender’s second and third seasons. The website states that the studio was motivated to emphasize progress through teamwork after learning of the historic launch of the Russian space station Mir in 1986.
