We are deeply saddened to share with you that NBC 4’s aerial photographer Brad Freitas passed away on December 12, 2023.
His death deeply affected his friends and family members. The family will be having a private memorial service of close friends and family to honor Brad’s life and legacy. After Brad’s death, his loved ones pay tribute to him. Kevin Shafer tweeted, “RIP Brad Freitas (Chopper Brad) you will be missed my friend.”

Brad Freitas is survived by his wife Kara Freitas, father Bob Freitas, brother Steven and his wife Erin, sister Sarah Waldron and her husband Wes. His nieces and nephews, Catherine, Arthur, Joseph, Reid, Sydney, Emma and Isla, will also appreciate and remember him.
Brad was an affectionate father to Olivia. They enjoyed telling stories about their new adventures together, like feeding the turtles at Fountain Rock Nature Preserve, going to the National Aquarium and taking gymnastics classes.
In addition, he delighted in teaching her how to play the harmonica and perform his all-time favorite James Taylor song, “You’ve Got a Friend.”

A Look at the Life of Brad Freitas
Bob and Cathy Freitas welcomed Brad into the world on September 28, 1981. Raised in Sterling, Virginia, he attended Potomac Falls High School, where he participated on the football and wrestling teams, before graduating in 1999.
He worked in the food and service industries after relocating to Frederick, Maryland, most notably as a manager of Tauraso’s and a bartender at Bushwaller’s Pub. He studied at Towson University and received a Bachelor of Science in Electronic Media and Film from there.
Brad served as a skilled photojournalist and reporter for Helicopter’s Incorporated and NBC Washington for more than ten years. He received two Emmys for his outstanding performance and viewers loved him as News Chopper Brad.
Brad was renowned for his generosity and for helping anyone in need, whether they were close friends or strangers. Brad was the life of the party, making sure that everyone laughed hard around him. His enormous heart and wonderful sense of humor will always be cherished memories of him.
