T.J. Oshie was born in Mount Vernon, Washington and was raised in Everett, north of Seattle. He was on ice at age five in the Seattle Junior Hockey Association, where he played for ten years. He moved to Stanwood with his mother Tina after his parents’ civil divorce and he enrolled in Stanwood High School as a freshman.
In 2002, Oshie moved to Warroad, Minnesota, where his parents were originally from and lived with his father, Tim and his father’s cousin. The St. Louis Blues selected him with the 24th overall choice in the first round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. After that, he played for the Blues for the first seven years of his NHL career until being traded to the Washington Capitals in 2015.
As a member of the Capitals in 2018, Oshie was the winner of the Stanley Cup. Since the NHL started using shootouts in overtime for the 2005–06 season, Oshie has established himself as a shootout specialist and is among the all-time leaders in goals scored and scoring percentage.
During his three seasons as a standout player on the hockey team at Warroad High School, he helped the squad win two Minnesota State Class A titles in 2003 and 2005.
All three years, he was selected to the state’s All-Tournament Team. He topped all Minnesota high school players in scoring as a senior, ending with 100 points (37 goals and 63 assists) in 31 games.
He was also chosen to the 2005 Associated Press and Pioneer Press All-State First Team and qualified for the Minnesota Mr. Hockey Finals. After his 2004–05 senior season with the Warriors, he played for the Fighting Sioux at the University of North Dakota.
