From Where Did Jaina Lee Ortiz Start Her Acting Career?
She was born in California on November 20, 1986[ and grew up in The Bronx, New York. Ortiz’s Cuban-American father, Joe Ortiz, used to be a first-class officer for the New York Police Department. She started dancing when she was nine years old by taking salsa and mambo classes.
When she was 15, she started teaching dance. By the following year, Ortiz was teaching and performing professionally all over the world. Ortiz started her career as an actress in student films. Then she went to Maggie Flanigan Studios and learned the Meisner style there for two years.
In 2009, Ortiz tried out for and was cast in the second season of VH1’s reality show Scream Queens. There, she and nine other would-be actresses competed in acting-based challenges to win a part in Saw 3D. The first episode aired on August 2, 2010 and Ortiz was named first runner-up at the end of the season.
A picture of Ortiz from 2012 was used in the Modern Family episode Yard Sale. In that picture, she was competing in a beauty show as Miss Galapa. Ortiz got the part of a series regular in “The After” in 2013. The show was produced by Chris Carter, who created The X-Files.
The pilot, which started showing on Amazon Video in February 2014 got good reviews and was picked up for a full season. However, Amazon Studios said on January 5, 2015, that they would not be moving forward with the show.
Two months later, Ortiz was cast as the lead female character in a pilot that was being considered for a name. She would be playing opposite Morris Chestnut. The show was given the go-ahead to go on in May 2015. Rosewood’s first episode aired on Fox on September 23, 2015.
In May 2017, after two seasons, the show was canceled. Later that same year, she had a recurring part in the second season of Shooter, a drama on the USA Network. Aside from that, Ortiz played herself in the comedy picture Girls Trip.
Ortiz was given a lead part on Station 19, a 2017 spin-off of Grey’s Anatomy, ABC’s longest-running drama show. The thriller film Righteous Thieves and the historical drama picture The Long Game both came out in 2023.
