How Did Tom Pryce’s Accident Happen?
Tom Pryce was a British race car driver who died in a terrible accident at Kyalami during the 1977 South African Grand Prix. He hit Frederik Jansen van Vuuren, a marshal, who was running across the track to help a driver whose car was on fire.
The impact killed both Pryce and van Vuuren right away. It also cut off van Vuuren’s head and threw his fire extinguisher into the air. With Pryce’s body still inside, the car kept going down the track until it hit the barriers and stopped. The crash was one of the worst and most frightening in Formula One history.
