Gayle Conelly Manchin is an American educator and government official who was the First Lady of West Virginia from 2005 to 2010 and is the current Federal Co-Chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission. Manchin grew up in Beckley, West Virginia and went to Woodrow Wilson High School.
She got her second master’s degree in educational technology leadership from Salem International University in 1999. Manchin has been a teacher in the Marion County Public School district and a professor at Fairmont State University, where she started the first Community Service Learning Program at the school.
Besides that, she was in charge of the AmeriCorps Promise Fellow Program in West Virginia. In her other job, Manchin set up the West Virginia Partnerships to Assure Student Success (WV PASS) program for the Office of the Secretary of Education and the Arts.
From 2013 to 2014, Manchin was head of the West Virginia Board of Education. From 2017 until her firing in March 2018, she was secretary of education and the arts for West Virginia.
