What Happened to Rachel Powell?
On January 6, 2021, Pennsylvania mother Rachel Powell was convicted guilty of directing rioters at the US Capitol with a bullhorn. She allegedly belonged to a group that confronted police and forced its way past obstacles.
Powell gave other rioters very detailed instructions regarding the layout of the Capitol while donning a pink hat, a blue jacket and a fur-lined hoodie. Powell broke through Capitol windows using a large pipe as a ramming device.
She is widely known as the “Bullhorn Lady” and was found guilty on a number of counts on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, including felony counts of interfering with an officer’s performance of their duty and obstructing an official procedure.
US District Judge Royce Lamberth announced the verdict following the trial which took place in May. Additionally, the mother has forfeited her right to a jury trial. For the duration of the sentencing, prosecutors asked that Powell be detained.
However, the judge ordered that she could be free up to the sentencing hearing. Attorney for Rachel Powell declined to comment on the verdict when he was questioned about it. She was also referred to as the “front and center” of the riot by Assistant US Attorney Elizabeth Aloi.
On Tuesday, October 17, 2023 Rachell Powell was sentenced to nearly five years in prison. Powell was ordered to serve 57 months in prison followed by 36 months on supervised release. She asked for three years of probation while the government sought eight years in prison.
