Bret Baier’s Journey: From Coastal TV to Fox News
Before joining WRAL-TV, the then-CBS affiliate in Raleigh, North Carolina, Baier started his television career with a regional station, WJWJ TV16, on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. In 1998, he sent Fox News an audition tape, and the network hired him to run its Atlanta bureau.
He traveled from Georgia to Arlington, Virginia, on September 11, 2001, to cover the Pentagon attack. He was hired as the network’s Pentagon correspondent, never returned to the Atlanta bureau, and spent five years in that position, making 11 trips to Afghanistan and 13 to Iraq.
In 2007, he was appointed as the White House correspondent for Fox News, where he covered the George W. Bush administration. He started filling in on Fridays for Special Report anchor Brit Hume in the fall of 2007.
On December 23, 2008, Hume revealed that Baier would take over as Special Report host and anchored his farewell episode. On January 5, 2009, he hosted his first program as a permanent anchor.
