The story of a mother’s struggle to get the truth about what happened to her missing daughter is told in the new “Lost Girls” movie on Netflix. It sheds light on how women are ethically assessed by law enforcement and the media when they become victims of violent crime and was based on the book by journalist Robert Kolker.
Liz Garbus, who was nominated for an Academy Award for her direction wrote the screenplay. “Lost Girls” is one of the best movies by women.

In real life, Mari Gilbert (played by Amy Ryan in the movie), the mother who was trying to find out what happened to her daughter Shannan Gilbert was killed herself.
What Was Mari Gilbert’s Cause of Death?
Mari Gilbert did not survive to see the Long Island architect who is accused of killing four young ladies whose bones were found near Gilgo Beach more than ten years ago being taken into custody.
Gilbert fought for her daughter Shannan, a 24-year-old New Jersey resident who vanished in May 2010. Her remains were discovered in December 2011 in a nearby coastal community.
Authorities have stated that her passing might have been an accident unrelated to the other homicides in the long-abandoned multiple homicide case known as the “Gilgo Four.” In her dying years, Mari Gilbert pushed the authorities to investigate her daughter’s abduction seriously.
Gilbert challenged the decision and tried to reopen the case as a murder investigation. Gilbert’s family requested an independent autopsy and the results revealed that Shannan might have been strangled to death.
She put up an unwavering fight to make sure Shannan and the other victims wouldn’t be forgotten. John Ray, an attorney for the Gilbert family said:
“Mari saw Shannan as an unintended hero because it was Shannan’s disappearance that ironically caused all the others to have been found and, now, to have at least one arrest.”
Mari’s other daughter Sarra used a 15-inch kitchen knife to stab Mari Gilbert numerous times. After that, a fire extinguisher was used to bash her to death.
Mari’s body was found in the Ellenville home of her daughter. Later that day, they caught Sarra and charged her with illegally having a gun and second-degree murder.

How Many Years Was Sara Imprisoned For?
Sarra Gilbert was given a sentence of 25 years to life in prison after losing her sister and experiencing both emotional and mental suffering.
Robert Kolker, the author of the 2013 book “Lost Girls: An Unsolved American Mystery” which closely examined the case said:
“Mari understood that one way of finding at least a shred of meaning in the loss of her daughter was that her disappearance led to the discovery of those four women several months later and that without Shannan there would be no case, there would be no search for the killer. She understood that very well, and I believe she found some redemption in that idea: that Shannan’s loss helped others learn the truth.”
