Mowins was born in Syracuse, New York and she is the sister of three brothers. Len Mowins is her father, while her mother’s name is unknown. Her father coached basketball at a high school. While attending North Syracuse High School in North Syracuse, New York, she played soccer, softball and basketball.
She served as the varsity basketball team captain for Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, for two seasons. She earned a BA from Lafayette in 1989 and an MA in broadcast and digital journalism from Syracuse University’s S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in 1990.
How did Beth Mowins Get Fame?
Mowins, one of the 2009 entrants into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame started her career in 1991 as the news and sports director for WXHC-FM Radio in Homer, New York.
In 1994, Mowins began working for ESPN, where he began covering college sports like volleyball, basketball, football, softball and soccer. When it comes to softball coverage including the Women’s College World Series, she has been the network’s primary voice.
On ESPN’s secondary broadcast team for the telecasts of the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Mowins was paired with Cat Whitehill. Mowins started serving as the play-by-play announcer for the preseason TV broadcasts of the Oakland and later Las Vegas Raiders in 2015.
Mowins was reportedly selected as the play-by-play announcer for ESPN’s Monday Night Football opening week late coverage between the Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos.
She performed the announcing duty in September of that year and making history by becoming the first woman to announce an NFL game that was broadcast nationwide. Additionally, she became just the second female play-by-play announcer in the NFL regular season’s history.
Mowins made her NBC Olympics debut in 2021 as the softball host for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. That same year, she started broadcasting NBA games on ESPN.
As part of ESPN’s goal to have an all-women broadcasting and production crew for the first time on a national scale in 2022, she collaborated with analyst Doris Burke to call an NBA game.
