Authorities claim that “Alec Sanford Lansing” was camping with Trails Carolina, a Lake Toxaway-based outdoor rehabilitation program when he set off on his own through the forest at about 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 10.
He was reported missing at 6 o’clock. Deputies alerted police about Lansing’s description and last known location and asked them to keep an eye out for the teenager.
On Nov. 10, a volunteer firefighter in Cashiers reported seeing someone who matched the teen’s description near a gas station. The employee claimed that a station employee confirmed the teen’s visit, but officers could not see the video due to technical issues with the store’s CCTV system.
For about two weeks, rescuers searched the dense, difficult, steep terrain of the Nantahala with land and air backup from numerous agencies from at least three counties. On Saturday, Nov. 22, Queen reported that Lansing was discovered “not very far” from his original camp with Trails Carolina.
Searchers discovered the body in a remote forest area. An autopsy was sought by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement to identify Lansing’s precise cause of death.
What Was Found in Alec Sanford’s Autopsy Report?
Pathologist Dr. William Selby performed the autopsy on Monday, November 24 and determined that the teen’s cause of death was hypothermia. Selby added that Lansing’s broken hip was another important aspect of the autopsy.
The announcement states that investigators who were in the area where Lansing’s body was discovered noted evidence of removed moss from a tree which leaned over the small stream in which Lansing was found on Saturday, Nov. 22.
Investigators think Lansing ascended the tree and fell into the small creek, breaking his hip and rendering him bedridden.
