Role of Robbie Robertson in Music
Robertson worked as a few-days-at-a-time carnival worker in a Toronto suburb and then as a three-weeks-at-a-time freak show helper at the Canadian National Exhibition when he was 14 years old. His song “Life is a Carnival” (sung by the Band) and his role as a producer and star in the 1980 film “Carny” were both inspired by this.
Robertson’s first band was Little Caesar and the Consuls, formed in 1956 by guitarist Gene MacLellan and pianist Bruce Morshead. For approximately a year, he and the band performed the biggest hits of the time at local teen dances.
