Numerous state and municipal authorities including Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis signed an open letter to Swift and informed that the area’s hotels stood to benefit greatly from her tour. They wrote, “Some properties are doubling and tripling charged because you are coming.”
A number of mayors, the majority leader of the Assembly, Issac Bryan, as well as state senators Dave Min and Maria Elena Durazo, also signed the letter.
According to the letter, a lot of housekeepers and other hotel employees cannot afford to live close to their places of employment; some even sleep in their cars in danger of losing their homes.
They wrote:
“Hotel workers are fighting for their lives. They are fighting for a living wage. They have gone on strike. Now, they are asking for your support, Stand with hotel workers and postpone your concerts.”
Unite Here, Local 11, which represents about 30,000 hotel workers is negotiating for higher compensation, better health benefits, lower workloads and bigger pension contributions. More than 60 hotels including ones owned by well-known names like Marriott and Hilton had contracts expire last month.
The state’s top official Kounalakis, a Democrat who has declared her intention to run for governor in 2026 is making the appeal. She is standing in solidarity with the striking workers. She said:
“I stand with Unite HERE in their fight for a living wage and I hope we can use this moment to bring attention to the hardworking men and women who are the engine of our economy.”
