Only three of the six seasons that creator Jeff Rake had planned for Manifest’s run had aired when NBC canceled the show in 2021. Then as Rake told the show’s creator felt “like a happy ending” when Netflix expressed interest in reviving the series for a total of 20 more episodes.
Season 4 of Manifest premiered on Netflix the following November and the final ten episodes of the series premiered this past Friday as part of season 4, part 2.
“Twenty episodes turned out to be plenty for us to tell our complete story,” Rake stated, ruling out a fifth season of Manifest, unless you include the final set of episodes as a fifth season. For example, Rake has hinted that he counts the remainder of Season 4 as Season 5. He explained the split into two parts to Entertainment Weekly, saying:
“For my purposes, I’m going to treat the story as if we had been gifted two 10-episode seasons.”
Some of the main cast members didn’t even find out how the series ended until many episodes had already aired: Hollywood Reporter quoted Melissa Roxburgh:
“In season three they had us film part of the ending.”
I learned at that point. I doubt they used what we shot, but because we were doing so, Jeff felt obligated to fill us in on the details.
Despite Rake’s original proposal for six seasons on NBC, the streaming service only considered three of his proposed post-season three iterations of the show: a two-hour feature, a six-episode series, and a twenty-episode season. Roxburgh said:
“By the time we heard we were getting 20 episodes, we’d been angry, happy, sad, all of it.”
This was in reference to the show’s cancellation and subsequent renewal.
Although Season 4 of Manifest came to a close with Episode 16, Josh Dallas, who plays Ben, hinted at the possibility of a spinoff to Hollywood Reporter. He said “I think there’s major sequel or spinoff potential here,” he remarked of the show.
