A 9 year old Illinois girl who was aIIegedly kἰdnapped by her non-custodial mother over six years ago has been discovered safe in North Carolina. Kayla Unbehaun was found after her mother Heather had a felony kἰdnapping warrant issued for her in July 2017.
Ryan her father said in a statement:
“I’m so happy Kayla is safe and sound at home. We ask for privacy as we get to know each other again and navigate this new beginning. I want to thank the City of Elgin, Illinois Police and Fire Departments, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and all law enforcement agencies who assisted with her case.”
A business proprietor in North Carolina supposedly recognized Kayla after watching her on an episode of the Netflix series “Unsolved Mysteries” and dialed the police. Heather Unbehaun was detained in Asheville over the weekend and is now being jaἰled on a $250,000 bond after being chἀrged with kἰdnapping a child.
Kayla Unbehaun was last seen on July 5, 2017, before she was aIIegedly abdμcted by her mother. When Kayla’s father Ryan went to pick her up at a Wheaton, Illinois residence that day, he discovered that Heather had packed her things and left the day before.
The age of Kayla Unbehaun is now fifteen. On Jan. 5, the day of his daughter Kayla’s 15th birthday, Ryan aIIegedly penned a tribute to her on the Facebook page Bring Kayla Home.
“I adore you and deeply miss you. I look forward to seeing you again and wake up hopeful that day will come soon. There is never enough time to prepare. Every day, I think about you in the hopes and prayers that you are secure, content and that you will soon rejoin my life, the post said. There are so many more people that adore and miss you.”
He continued:
“Now that you’re a young woman, you have your own ideas and opinions. The truth about how things were when we were all able to be together and how wonderful things actually were, I hope you could recall when you were old enough to recognize that you only know half of the tale from one point of view.”
