On Monday 15 May, after the release of the report by Special Counsel John Durham claiming that the investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia was unnecessary, former President Trump said that former FBI Director James Comey and Democrats need to be held accountable for spending years on the matter.
“I and much more importantly, the American public, have been victims of this long-running and treasonous charade started by the Democrats — started by Comey,” Trump told.
According to Durham’s report, the DOJ and FBI “failed to uphold their mission of strict fidelity to the law” when they began investigating potential collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.
Because “John Durham is a very thorough investigator,” Trump remarked, “this report took a long time.” “But the end result is undeniably a disaster for fairness.”
Trump continued:
“The implications for national security of what they did are very grave.”
The study, which was compiled by Durham over the course of several years, was made public on Monday afternoon. It details his findings regarding the beginnings of the initial FBI inquiry, codenamed “Crossfire Hurricane.”
More than 300 pages were devoted to his findings, which examined whether or not the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to influence the 2016 presidential election.
We determine that the Department and the FBI failed to uphold their mandate of strict loyalty to the law in connection with some events and activities outlined in this report based on our review of Crossfire Hurricane and related intelligence efforts,” the report concluded.
Furthermore, Durham found that “senior FBI personnel displayed a serious lack of analytical rigor towards the information that they received, especially information received from politically-affiliated persons and entities.”
The report claims that:
“The Department did not adequately examine or question these materials and the motivations of those providing them,” despite the Director of the FBI and others learning of important and potentially contradicting intelligence around the same time.”
Both former FBI Director James Comey and former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe are mentioned by name in Durham’s report.
Durham said:
“I do not recommend any wholesale changes in the guidelines and policies that the Department and the FBI now have in place to ensure proper conduct and accountability in how counterintelligence activities are carried out.”
Current FBI leadership has implemented scores of corrective actions in response to the conduct in 2016 and 2017 that Special Counsel Durham investigated.

The FBI noted that if the changes proposed in the report had been implemented in 2016, the blunders detailed there would not have occurred.
According to the report, “this report reinforces the importance of ensuring that the FBI continues to do its work with the rigor, objectivity, and professionalism the American people deserve and rightly expect.”
