An Upshur County police officer with many years of service died unexpectedly this week. The dea†h of Sheriff Virgil Miller of Upshur County was reported by the county government on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 morning.
The dea†h was reported on the official Facebook page of the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office. The cause of dea†h is unknown yet.
According to a county statement:
“The Upshur County Sheriff’s Department and other county offices are saddened to announce the sudden passing of Upshur County Sheriff Virgil D. Miller, Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and his brothers and sisters in law enforcement.”
Miller was sworn in for a third term as Upshur County Sheriff in 2020, having previously been elected twice. His 40-year law enforcement career included two stints as sheriff, each lasting eight years.
According to reports, Miller moved from Webster County to Upshur County in 1980. He also served the county as chief deputy, magistrate and chief of the Buckhannon Police Department before becoming sheriff.
Miller’s fame spread far and wide as time passed. He frequently responded to emergencies and helped out his fellow police, setting a good example.
Miller said:
“I really want to see the deputies out in the community, I’ve always been the kind of sheriff to get out there in the community and I’m going to be going out with the deputies, because I wouldn’t ask them to do anything I wouldn’t. I believe in leading by example, by being there.”
According to a statement sent by the county on Tuesday morning, funeral arrangements are still in progress. If the statement is to be believed:
“Viewing and funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time. Daily operations of the Sheriff’s Department and Tax Office will continue and the Office of the Upshur County Commission will release additional details in the coming days.”
