After hearing criticism about his wife, Emilia Harcourt actress Jennifer Holland, DC Studios President James Gunn defended her casting.
In September 2022, Gunn tied the knot with his longtime love of seven years, Holland, in front of several Marvel and DC celebrities. In 2015, Smallville’s Michael Rosenbaum, a mutual acquaintance of the two Hollywood actors, set them up on a date, and the relationship has been going strong ever since.
Gunn first hired Holland to play ARGUS agent Harcourt in his film The Suicide Squad, and she returned to work with him in subsequent films like Peacemaker and Black Adam.
In Defense of James Gunn’s Wife Casting
James Gunn, President of DC Studios, responded to a fan who said he should “stop placing his wife in every DC project.” The director has been seeing Jennifer Holland, who played Emilia Harcourt, since 2015 and they tied the knot in September 2022.
Although Gunn’s wife reprised her role in his HBO Max series Peacemaker, he confirmed that The Suicide Squad was the only DC production in which she appeared. Her only other major DC film appearance was in Black Adam, and he claimed: “nothing to do with the casting of any other movie.”
The 2019 superhero horror film Brightburn, which Gunn produced with a screenplay written by his cousin Mark Gunn and brother Brian Gunn, featured Holland.

There’s a Good Reason Why James Gunn’s DCU Reboot Will Include Jennifer Holland Again
Emilia Harcourt, played by Jennifer Holland, is one of the few characters that appear to be safe when James Gunn wipes much of the DCU slate clean for his next reboot, and no, it has nothing to do with the fact that they’re married.
In Waller, Harcourt will presumably be rejoining the other “members of Team Peacemaker” that Gunn has already revealed will be returning. In addition, Season 2 of Peacemaker appears to be moving forward despite Gunn’s current commitment to writing and directing Superman: Legacy.
After seeing Gunn’s own characters from The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker continue on while others, like Henry Cavill’s Superman, be abandoned, many fans voiced their displeasure. Some have said that this suggests the DC Studios chief is favoring certain characters in preparation for the reboot, which would be an indication of bias on his behalf.
No one knows for sure where we’ll see Holland’s Harcourt next, but a safe bet would be HBO Max’s Waller since she plays into that character. Nevertheless, given that nobody anticipated her little cameo in Black Adam coming, maybe she’ll show up somewhere nobody expects.
