Gollum is a fictional character in J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth legendarium. Initially appearing in the fantasy novel The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien in 1937, he gained prominence in the trilogy’s sequel, The Lord of the Rings.
Gollum was one of the River-folk, a Stoor Hobbit who resided in the area around the Gladden Fields. According to The Lord of the Rings, before the One Ring corrupted him, his name was Sméagol, but he was renamed Gollum because of the “awful eating noise in his throat.”
What are the Characteristics of Gollum?
Tolkien made no mention of Gollum’s size in the first publication of The Hobbit, prompting artists like Tove Jansson to depict him as enormous. The fact that Gollum was “a little slimy thing” was left out of earlier copies, but Tolkien rectified this in the subsequent publications.
One of the Orcs characterizes him as somewhat like a spider himself or possibly like a famished frog in reference to Shelob in The Two Towers.
The Hobbit portrays Gollum as having a slender face, “large wide pale eyes” and being “as dark as darkness” and says that he carried a tooth-sharpening-rock, goblin teeth, wet shells and a fragment of bat wing in his pockets.
Ithilien’s rangers speculate in The Two Towers that he might be a tailless black squirrel. Sam says that when Gollum followed them on the River Anduin in a log, he had paddle feet like a swan’s practically only they appeared bigger in The Fellowship of the Ring.
Tolkien described Gollum as having a pale complexion, dark clothing and being frequently seen in dim lighting in a text meant to orient illustrators to the appearance of his characters.
Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring’s Aragorn says of Strider, “his malice is immense and gives him a strength barely to be believed in one so emaciated and withered.”
While grappling with Sam, Gollum’s hold is characterized as soft, yet horrifically strong in The Two Towers. Sam describes Gollum’s dual nature, calling him “Stinker” for his evil side and “Slinker” for his docile side; the green flash in Gollum’s eyes indicates the transition between the two.

When Will The Lord of the Rings: Gollum be Released?
A new release window for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has been set for somewhere between April and September of 2023.
On Thursday, March 9, 2023, a clip was revealed at a Nacon livestream showcase and it featured Gollum collaborating with a youthful Gandalf and battling an emissary of the evil lord Sauron, both of whom wanted the Ring for their own ends.
While turning Smeagol/Gollum into a likable character is no easy task that seems to be the direction this story is taking. Daedalic Productions delayed The Lord of the Rings: Gollum in July, despite the fact that it had been announced in 2019 and had been scheduled for September 2022.
While Nacon’s public relations team has only mentioned the year 2023, the developer promised investors in January that the action adventure would be available between April and September of that year.
Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One and Xbox One X will all support The Lord of the Rings: Gollum upon its release.
