Florence Ballard’s life story was one of victory and sorrow, interspersed with short periods of acclaim followed by a tragic ending. “Flo,” or “Blondie” as she was sometimes called because of her relatively light hair, was the nickname of the Supremes’ first member, Florence Ballard, who sang on ten No. 1 hits with the unrivaled Motown three.
On June 30, 1943, Florence was born into a large family that struggled financially. As a youngster, she entered a talent contest alongside future member Mary Wilson, around the time a girl named Diane, later Diana, Ross arrived in their area.
Wilson gushed over Ballard’s voice in the contest in her autobiography Dreamgirl. “When we walked home, we analyzed our performances down to the smallest detail,” she said.
We agreed that if either of us were ever approached about joining a singing group, the other would be contacted first.
