On Monday(February 20, 2023) the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office announced that they had arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting death of a Catholic bishop known for his work as a community peacemaker.
On Saturday(Feb 18, 2023), the body of Auxiliary Bishop David O’Connell was discovered in his Hacienda Heights, California, home; the sheriff’s department is treating his death as a homicide. According to Deputy Lizette Falcon of CNN, deputies located O’Connell shortly before 1 p.m. Saturday after receiving an emergency call.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna announced at a press conference on Monday that 65-year-old Carlos Medina was taken into custody after a standoff with deputies at his home in Torrance. Luna mentioned that the bishop’s housekeeper’s husband, Medina, had helped out around the house.
According to Luna, the investigation into Medina was initiated after a tip was received alleging that he had been acting strangely and making comments about the bishop owing him money.
According to Luna, detectives learned from surveillance footage that an SUV matching the description of one Medina is known to drive recently pulled into the bishop’s driveway before leaving again.
Luna emphasized that he is not yet certain of any dispute and that detectives do not yet know the motive for O’Connell’s killing. When asked what charges Medina was up against, Luna said, “We’re still putting that together.”
CNN is investigating whether or not Medina retains legal representation. According to Luna, Medina’s wife has spoken with investigators and is cooperative. Two firearms and other evidence possibly linking Medina to the crime were discovered at Medina’s home in Torrance about 35 miles southwest of Hacienda Heights, the sheriff said.

He added that the firearms have not yet been analyzed to determine their possible role in the bishop’s murder. Saturday, the bishop was running late for a meeting so Luna said a deacon drove to O’Connell’s house to make sure he was okay.
According to Luna, 911 was called because a deacon reported that O’Connell had stopped breathing. Luna stated that there was no evidence of a break-in at the bishop’s residence.
