Mama Cax, a model and activist who fought for the rights of people of color and people with disabilities in the fashion business, passed away on Friday after a weeklong illness, her family revealed on social media. She was in her thirties.
After discovering blood clots in her leg, thigh, belly, and near a filter in her lungs (put there for cancer treatment in her teens), the Haitian American model born Cacsmy Brutus had been vocal about health difficulties in recent weeks, on Instagram. For a week in the hospital, she fought her sickness with “the same courage” she had used to battle cancer, but on December 16 she passed away.
Cax was “a fighter, to put it mildly,” the article says. Cax was diagnosed with bone and lung cancer at the age of 14. At 16, she had to have her right leg amputated after an unsuccessful hip replacement surgery. Mama Cax, a model and outspoken supporter of diversity in the fashion industry, self-love, and self-confidence, made her debut in 2017 with a campaign for Wet ‘n’ Wild.
She later collaborated with Sephora, Tommy Hilfiger, ASOS, and Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty and appeared on the cover of Teen Vogue in 2018. In addition to her popularity, Mama Cax is known for her open and honest commentary on the importance of body acceptance and welcoming the opinions of people with disabilities.
“I started using social media to talk about my body insecurities after childhood cancer left me with a million scars (mostly emotional) and an amputated leg,” she wrote in a November Instagram post. “The question I hate the most is “who is your role model“ – never had one until I became my own role model BUT I admire strong and fierce people who use their privileges to uplift others.”
Rihanna, who cast Mama Cax in her Savage X Fenty lingerie fashion show this September, expressed her sadness over the loss of the model and actress on Friday as news of her death circulated online.
“A queen. A force. A powerhouse beauty that brought her strength to the @savagexfenty stage this year inspiring so many across the globe. Rest In Power sis,” Rihanna tweeted.
