Orange County police are still attempting to figure out what motivated a motorist to run over a biker on Wednesday, then knife him to death in Dana Point.
The deceased has been named as 58-year-old emergency room physician Michael Mammone of Providence Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach. On Wednesday at around 3 p.m., Vanroy Smith, 39, of Long Beach, allegedly hit Mammone with his white Lexus automobile near the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Crown Valley Parkway.
According to eyewitnesses who spoke with deputies, Smith exited his truck and stabbed Mammone multiple times after the collision.
Witnesses reportedly detained Smith at the site until law enforcement officers arrived. Sadly, Mammone passed away while receiving medical care. There has been no link established between the two men thus far by the investigation.
“As of right now we currently don’t truly understand the why… as far as motivation and any type of relationship,” Orange County Sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Woodruff told KTLA. “Investigators are keeping all options open to check those boxes if you will, to make sure they don’t leave anything uncovered.”

The death of Dr. Mammone was described as a “shocking tragedy” in a statement released Thursday by Providence Mission Hospital.
“The entire Mission Hospital family is grieving over the loss of an incredible physician and friend,” the statement read. “We will honor Dr. Mammone’s dedication to our community and passion for medicine by continuing to provide exceptional care.”
After questioning, Smith was taken into custody on murder charges.
