On Thursday, the Detroit Lions announced that former linebacker Jessie Lemonier had passed away at 25. The circumstances behind Lemonier’s passing remain unknown. After signing with the Houston Gamblers and being moved, Lemonier intended to play with the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL this spring. In November, the Arlington Renegades of the XFL also picked Lemonier.
“We are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of former Detroit Lion Jessie Lemonier,” the Lions said in a statement. “Jessie was a model teammate and wonderful young man who is gone far too soon. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”

After being promoted from the team’s practice squad, Lemonier participated in seven games that year for the Lions, including two starts. In 161 snaps, he recorded 1.5 sacks, 3 QB hits, and 15 tackles. On special teams, Lemonier logged 46 total snaps.
On May 16, 2022, the Lions waived Lemonier before he was taken off waivers by the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals then waived him a few weeks later, on September 1.

Lemonier’s agent, Drew Smith, confirmed to ESPN that the linebacker and his longtime girlfriend are expecting their first child. In 2020, Lemonier joined the Los Angeles Chargers of the National Football League as an undrafted free agent. In 2020, he saw action in six games with the Chargers, contributing two tackles and two quarterback hits on 44 defensive plays. In two seasons (2018-2019), he recorded 20.5 sacks for Liberty.
