UTSA Football: History
Start-up and organization (2006–2010)
With an eye on expanding its athletics program, the University of Texas at San Antonio contacted Carr Sports Associates, Inc. in February 2006 to undertake a feasibility study and provide recommendations. Results from that study were delivered to UTSA in November. To determine whether or not students would approve of a fee hike, the institution held a referendum in September 2007 at CSA’s urging. More than two-thirds of student votes approved the price hike.
After receiving administrative permission in December 2008, UTSA presented a long-term plan to the University of Texas System Board of Regents that included a proposed fee hike and an $84 million athletic complex. The board quickly agreed with the proposal.
Larry Coker (2011–2015)
On September 3, 2011, UTSA kicked off their debut season at the Alamodome versus Northeastern State. Record attendance for a debut season in NCAA Division I FBS was set by UTSA, who saw 56,743 fans in attendance. After their inaugural season, the UTSA Roadrunners went 4-6, setting a record for the highest average home attendance for a brand-new football team with 35,521. The previous record, set in South Florida in 1997, was 33,038.
