Horimiya Season 2 anime seems improbable now that Kyoko Hori and Izumi Miyamura’s relationship has reached a new level, but what about OVA episodes focusing on their friends’ relationships? On May 25, 2021, two new Hori-san to Miyamura-kun OVA episodes were published. Animation Studio Gonzo is responsible for their production. (See below for further explanation.)
But will Season 2 of Horimiya be released? Or will the manga’s conclusion in March 2021 affect the anime television series? The first season of the Horimiya anime TV series was created by animation company Cloverworks, which is notable for creating The Promised Neverland, Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai, co-producing Darling in the FranXX, and Fate/Grand Order. In 2021, they also published Shadows House and the well-received original novella Wonder Egg Priority.
The first season of the Horimiya anime was directed by Masashi Ishihama, who is best known for directing the Persona 5 anime and the Shinsekai Yori anime. In addition, he directed the 2016 film Garakowa -Restore the World- and served in non-directing capacities for Bleach, Encouragement of Climb, ERASED, FLCL ED, and Psycho-Pass.
Takao Yoshioka was responsible for the series’ writing and music. He has also worked on Elfen Lied, High School DxD, Demon King Daimao, Major, The Seven Deadly Sins Season 2 (see our article on The Seven Deadly Sins Season 5: Dragon’s Judgement), The Testament of Sister New Devil, and The Familiar of Zero.
The character designer is Iizuka Haruko (Josee, the Tiger, and the Fish, Children of the Whales). The soundtrack was composed by Masaru Yokoyama (A3!, Black Fox, Fate/Apocrypha, Fruits Basket Season 3, Plastic Memories). The OP (opening) and ED (ending) theme songs for Season 2 of Horimiya have not yet been announced.
The opening theme of the first season of Horimiya was “Iro Kousui” by Yoh Kamiyama. Friends performed “Yakusoku” for the Horimiya ED. The official website’s Horimiya Blu-Ray/DVD page confirms that the first season will be published in seven box set volumes, the first of which will be available on February 24, 2021. The 13th episode of the first season of Horimiya was published on April 4, 2021.
Horimiya Season 2 Release Date
Horimiya Season 2’s release date has not been announced by Aniplex, Square Enix, Studio CloverWorks, or any other entity involved in developing the anime as of the most recent update. Neither has the production of a sequel to Horimiya been confirmed. Once the news is officially confirmed, the necessary information will be added to this page.
It is currently difficult to predict when or if the Season 2 premiere of Horimiya will occur in the future. With the conclusion of the manga series, the primary question is whether the production will be approved. Similar to how CloverWorks concluded the remaining chapters of The Promised Neverland manga is only 11 chapters, the first season of the Horimiya anime concluded with the complete plot in 13 episodes. Even the conclusion was a slideshow of missed manga story arcs!
Both reviewers and anime fans have given highly positive reviews, with scores comparable to other romcom anime like Kaguya-sama: Love is War. The production of Kaguya-sama Season 3 has already been confirmed, but based on how the story was adapted, Horimiya is extremely unlikely to become a multi-season anime.
AnimeJapan 2021 coincidentally included a stage presentation for the Horimiya anime. The event occurred just days before the premiere of the anime’s final episode, so no announcement was made.
Compared to the anime, Horimiya manga
The success of the Horimiya manga is primarily attributable to the slow-burn romance and how the small fluffy moments between Hori and Miyamura strengthen their relationship. The readership grew to care for the characters, support their love, and become invested in the situation.
The main manga is a tad more humorous than the original self-published manga. Additionally, it will be several chapters before the original peak and conclusion are achieved. Since some of the stories from the Hori-san to Miyamura-kun Omake chapters are utilized to stretch the storyline, a choice was probably taken to lengthen the main manga intentionally.
In the first 40 chapters, the original idea of the main manga was very plot-heavy and fast-paced, with Chapter 37 being a particular highlight. The manga then slows down for around 20 chapters, engaging in rom-com clichés such as sports festivals and kotatsu hijinks, until reaching its climax between Chapters 60 and 64.
From that point on, the manga transitions from a romcom ambiance to a slice-of-life one in which sporadic chapters advance the main storyline. Consequently, if Horimiya Season 2 or a series of OVA episodes were to be produced, the ties between Hori and Miyamura’s friends would be emphasized further.
