David Muir was raised on Onondaga Hill and was born into a Catholic household in Syracuse, New York. Muir has six nieces and three nephews in addition to one older sibling and two younger step-siblings. He grew up watching ABC News’ main program every night with his family and he attributes his greatest journalistic influence to longtime anchor Peter Jennings.
After his May 1991 graduation from Onondaga Central Junior-Senior High School, he enrolled at nearby Ithaca College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism with honors in May 1995. He worked as an intern at Syracuse’s WTVH-TV while in high school.
A lecturer Muir had while in college inspired him, telling him he had “the cut of a TV newsman.” He studied abroad for another semester with the Institute for the International Education of Students at the University of Salamanca in Spain, after spending a semester at Georgetown University’s Institute on Political Journalism at the Fund for American Studies.
