James Gregory Career And Legacy
He debuted on Broadway in a Key Largo play in 1939. During World War II, he was a member of the US Navy and US Marine Corps from 1941 until 1946. A scene from one of his early acting roles in army training films can be seen in the 1982 film The Atomic Cafe.
In addition, he had a year of radio experience in the 21st Precinct (1955– 1956). Gregory starred in forty-five episodes of the NBC crime thriller The Lawless Years, which was set in the 1920s.
In the 1959–1961 television series, he portrayed NYPD Detective Barney Ruditsky. Following his role as the McCarthyite Senator Iselin in The Manchurian Candidate (1962), Gregory costarred with Cliff Robertson in the 1963 movie PT 109.
He portrayed MacDonald, the espionage boss of Dean Martin in the Matt Helm film series; Dr. Tristan Adams in the 1966 episode “Dagger of the Mind” from the original Star Trek series; and Elvis Presley in the 1967 picture Clambake.
Gregory made history as the first actor to play Jonathan Kaye, a recurrent character on Hawaii Five-O, in the series’ pilot film from 1968. Gregory appeared in Detective School as Nick Hannigan. In the television series Barney Miller, he played Deputy Inspector Frank Luger on a semi-regular basis. His last acting role was in a Mr. Belvedere episode from 1986.
