How did Tommy Davidson get his Start in Stand-Up Comedy?
In 1986, a childhood buddy of Davidson’s pushed him to make his stand-up debut at a strip club in Washington, DC. The performance went well, and over the next four years, he repeated it in venues all throughout Washington, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. The likes of Patti LaBelle, Starpoint, and Kenny G. were among the big names he eventually opened for. In 1987, he triumphed at an Apollo Theater amateur stand-up competition. Tommy moved to North Hollywood because he was determined to establish a name for himself in the entertainment industry.
After settling in California, he began his stand-up comedy career at the Comedy Store. He also made acquaintances like Robert Townsend and Martin Lawrence around this period. He had already made a few public appearances prior to his appearance on “The Arsenio Hall Show.”

In 1989, he made his television debut on “CBS Summer Playhouse.” Later, in the early 1990s, he guest-starred on 125 episodes of “In Living Color” in a wide range of roles. His first notable film appearance was in 1991’s “Strictly Business.” Davidson had film roles in the early 1990s, including “Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls.”
