The first line of a New York Times piece on the sad death of Echo Brown describes her as “a late blooming storyteller”. She was 39 and her first one-person show was staged when she was 31. She then published two successful novels and sadly didn’t reach 40. How is that “late”?

The Journey of a Novelist “Echo Brown” From Adversity to Achievement
Brown was raised in a difficult environment after being born there on April 10, 1984. She was the class valedictorian and Brown’s English instructor took her in during her senior year so she could keep excelling at John Hay High School.
Brown became the first person in her family to attend college when she earned a B.A. in political science from Dartmouth College in 2006. Brown had a difficult road to becoming a published novelist.
She started her career by working for a private company that investigated complaints of misbehavior against New York City police officers. Before enrolling in the investigative journalism program at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, Brown began working as a legal assistant.
In order to work for the group Challenge Day which provides anti-bullying and violence-prevention training for high school kids, she relocated to California in 2011. However, after discovering that the program was not a good fit, she switched coasts.
As part of her duties as a motivational speaker at Challenge Day, Brown was required to tell a portion of her own life story, and she quickly discovered she was skilled at doing so.
She wanted to learn more about storytelling, so she signed up for a class with director and playwright David Ford at Berkeley’s The Marsh Theater.
A Jazzman’s Blues, the third book by Brown and Tyler Perry, an actor, producer and director is based on Perry’s original screenplay for a Netflix film of the same name. Brown passed away while still writing this book.
