Joan relocated to Sioux Falls to pursue a career in television journalism. She began as a reporter at KSFY TV and is now the weeknight anchor for both the 6 PM and 10 PM Eyewitness newscasts. Later in her career, she was able to gain employment at KELO, KDLT, and SDPB.
Many women reporters in Sioux Falls and South Dakota owe their careers to Joan’s example. During her time at each network, she earned a reputation as a fierce, dedicated, and trustworthy journalist. She did this while taking care of her son as a single parent and then her other two children as a stay-at-home mum. She was always there for her kids, no matter what they were into.
In addition to her love of music and devotion to her rural upbringing, Joan also possessed an innate self-assurance that can’t be taught. Joan was an avid researcher, reader, learner, and editor in both her professional and personal life. She rewrote her own birthday card wording to loved ones and went as far as correcting her children’s text message grammar.
She was brilliant, funny, well-spoken, and generous. Her death will be mourned by everyone who knew and loved her.
