Bedelia was born in the Manhattan borough of New York City. Her mother, Marian Ethel Wagner, was a writer and editor and her father, Philip Harley Culkin, who was 50 years old at the time and worked in public relations was also 50.
When she was born, her father’s business had just gone bankrupt and the family lived in a cold-water tenement flat. When she was 14, her mother died and her father, who always had ulcers died soon after. She has two brothers and a sister. One of her brothers is the actor Kit Culkin and her sister is Candice Culkin.
