What is the expected Path of Exile 2 release date? The first version of Path of Exile, a free-to-play ARPG with roots in the Diablo series, came out in 2013. After the unprecedented success of Diablo 4, fans of top-down action role-playing games will soon have an abundance of options, as Path of Exile 2 is scheduled for release not long after Diablo 4. I’m curious to see who comes out on top.
Since the old Path of Exile is still active, it can be difficult to sift through the noise and find the important updates about Path of Exile 2. Keep reading to find out everything we know about the upcoming sequel, including when it will be released, what it will be like to play, and more.
Path of Exile 2 Release Date
On June 7th, 2024, the closed beta for Path of Exile 2 will begin. It’s still unknown how we’ll be invited to participate in the closed beta, but we should be able to sign up for it sometime in the next few months.

Beyond the closed beta, the release date for Path of Exile 2 is unclear at this time. There hasn’t been much of an update from the creators, who have only said, “We’re unfortunately a little bit further out than we were hoping,” so you should probably expect a good amount of time to pass.
Path of Exile 2 has been delayed significantly, of course. Even with the best intentions in the world, the initial 2019 announcement and the first estimated release date of 2022, unfortunately, didn’t pan out.

Can We Call Path of Exile 2 a Sequel?
Path of Exile 2 will be released as a standalone product, contrary to what we were led to believe. This was verified by the creators at the last ExileCon. The reason is that the game has grown beyond the boundaries of an expansion or patch, rendering such options obsolete.
Because of this, Path of Exile 2 will no longer have any connection to the endgame or campaign of Path of Exile 1. On the other hand, Path of Exile 1 will be continued. In recent interviews, Creative Director Jonathan Rogers stated-
“People like that game, there’s no reason to destroy it if we don’t have to, and we can run them both concurrently so we might as well do so.”
Additionally, everything of your in-game purchases from Path of Exile 1 will carry over to the sequel.
Path of Exile 2 Gameplay
Path of Exile 2 is essentially the same game that began as a massive expansion for the original Path of Exile. Unlocking skills, gaining passives, and using socket gems to level up your character are all still in play.
Creators said:
“One way a lot of games do make it so you have skill variety is that they just add a bunch of cooldowns to a lot of stuff and you just have a rotation where you use one skill, then this skill, then this skill.”
That isn’t the kind of aesthetic we like at all. We’d much rather have it set up such that you employ your abilities only when it’s in your best interest to do so.

Path of Exile 2 will be a significant challenge for players upgrading from Path of Exile 1. The designers previously told us that “if you die in POE1 on Hardcore, you simply respawn and pick up where you left off in the fight.” The boss fight in POE2 must be restarted to continue. That’s a big deal since it suggests the equilibrium has shifted significantly. Numerous other deaths are predicted.
