On May 25, 2023, W. Kaween Fernando of Chicopee’s Willimansett neighborhood pἀssed away. His deἀth is a big loss to his community. On October 17, 1986, he was welcomed into the world in Colombo, Sri Lanka as the adored child of Welisarage M. and Deepthi (Mendis) Fernando.
At the age of three, he and his family emigrated to the country. He then resided in Brooklyn and Long Island, New York, before relocating to Chicopee, Massachusetts, where he spent the rest of his life. He graduated from Chicopee High School and went on to Northeastern University in Boston to earn a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.
He attended services at Chicopee’s Saint Anthony of Padua Church. He liked to cook, especially his preferred specialty cuisine. In addition, Kaween loved trivia, visiting vineyards and wineries, and going to the seaside with his adored fiancée. He was committed to his neighborhood and active in local politics.
He was above all a devoted son, brother, fiancé, and friend. He gave his friends and family unending love and support. In addition to his parents, he also leaves behind his devoted fiancée, Dr. Mahawa Sam of Worcester; his loving sisters, Kawinthi N. Fernando and her husband, Jeffrey Busha and their family, of Staten Island, NY; and his two dear uncles.
On June 1, 2023, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Anthony of Padua Church, 56 Saint Anthony Street, Chicopee, Massachusetts 01013, beginning at the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, Massachusetts 01020.
At Sainte Rose Cemetery, 49 Olsen Street, Chicopee, Massachusetts 01020, his bυrial will take place after the Mass. On Wednesday, May 31, 2023, his family will have friends and family at the fυneral home from 4 to 7 p.m.

At 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, Massachusetts 01020, the funeral home’s parking lot and main entrance are situated in the back. His family asks that memorial contributions be sent in Kaween’s honor to the Peralanda Church in Peralanda, Sri Lanka, rather than sending flowers.
