Is Ted Lasso Leaving AFC Richmond?
We won’t know till next week… However, Ted appears to be leaving AFC Richmond and returning to the United States. Following Ted’s journey from the first scene of Season 3 to his final moment before speaking with Rebecca, it’s not difficult to assume that Ted plans to return to the United States. Ted dejectedly boarded his son’s trip from Heathrow to Kansas City at the beginning of the season while pondering why he was still in the UK.
Ted confesses that he is reluctant to become too close to Henry after finally addressing his mother about her poor parenting choices following his father’s passing. His mother provides him with advice about parenthood, life, and love.
All of this, together with the episode’s two poignant musical cues, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “Home,” imply that Ted’s extraordinary trip with AFC Richmond is drawing to an end and will soon inform Rebecca that he is leaving for home. The Wizard of Oz allusions apply to Kansas City, not Kansas, the state.
If this is the case, it explains why Sudeikis has hesitated to declare that this is the end of the plot and why there have been speculations that this is Ted Lasso’s final season. The “Ted Lasso” saga may end with his departure, but Apple TV+ could easily continue Rebecca and the rest of the AFC Richmond family in various spin-offs.
Given that Coach Beard made apologies to Nate after Episode 11, it is the only course that makes sense. Ted will depart home, and Nate will return and take over Richmond.
