A crowd crush at a concert by American rapper GloRilla in New York state claimed two lives and left eight others hospitalized. Police in Rochester initially told CNN that they had reason to believe that panicked concertgoers had fled the Main Street Armory after hearing gunshots late in the evening.
In a subsequent statement, the police said:
We are hearing many reports of potential causes, including crowd size, shots fired, pepper spray and more.
Reports from witnesses at the scene suggest that these victims were crushed. No one has been shot or stabbed and there are no signs of a gunfight. Police found an injured 33-year-old woman named Rhondesia Belton from nearby Buffalo inside the arena; she later died from her wounds.
A second female victim, age 35 was confirmed dead by police on Monday, March 6, 2023. Another woman is still listed in critical condition, but the seven others do not appear to have life-threatening wounds. Questions about whether or not the venue’s management adhered to basic safety protocols are currently being looked into.
The Grammy-nominated rapper from Memphis claimed she was unaware of the incident until after she had left the venue. She Tweeted: “I am devastated & heartbroken over the tragic deaths that happened after Sunday’s show”.

Rochester Mayor Malik D. Evans called the incident a “tragedy of epic proportions” and “completely unacceptable” at a press conference, as per Guardian reports. To be trampled underfoot is not something anyone hopes for at a concert. You need to be able to return home to your loved ones.
We will not tolerate the actions of last night’s participants, he declared emphatically. Ultimately, I want to find out what’s going on here. As one woman put it to a local news outlet, she was “watching the life flash before my eyes” due to the mayhem inside the arena.
