A second season of Velma is in the works, despite mixed reviews from the critics. The announcement was made public for the first time today in an interview with Warner Bros. Television Group Chairman and CEO Channing Dungey published by Deadline. At the end of last week, the controversial cartoon series concluded its first season.
Although it has not yet been officially renewed, a source close to the production has confirmed that a second season is in the works. All indicators point to additional adventures for this adult-animated version of the Scooby-Doo gang, however, it’s not unheard of for shows to be canceled after development has begun.
With a low 42% critical rating on reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the series has received mixed reviews from critics and outright outrage from many fans.
In her review, while she praised some of the humor and the portrayals of Daphne and Fred, Brittany Vincent wrote, “this show likely came about because of fans who have always wanted more for the teenage super-solver. Ironically, the series would be exponentially better without its namesake – or, at least a version of her with a bit more character growth.”

It was termed “a self-aware slog” by Entertainment Weekly and “can’t scare up a reason to exist” by Variety. Statistics are hard to refute, however. Even with the criticism, a second season is likely given that it was HBO Max’s most-watched animated series premiere ever.
