A Chihuahua was recently named the oldest living dog by Guinness World Records, but just two weeks later, a much older dog came forward to claim the title. Based on his birthday February 1st Bobi is 30 years and 266 days old, as verified by Guinness World Records.

His expected lifespan is between 12 and 14 years because he is a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, a breed of livestock guardian dog. In doing so, he has set a new record for the oldest dog in the world. However, Bobi wasn’t meant to live very long.
Who is the Owner of Bobi?
The Portuguese village of Conqueiros is where Bobi and his litter of three male puppies were born. The previous owners already had too many pets and decided they couldn’t take care of any more at the time. Leonel Costa, age 38, is one of the Costa family’s sons and the current owner of Bobi.
According to his report in Guinness World Records, many people routinely dispose of unwanted newborn puppies by burying them. Costa’s father removed Bobi and his siblings from the hospital shortly after birth and buried them.
But Costa noticed something odd in the days that followed. Gira, Bobi’s mom kept returning to the kennel even after all of the puppies had been adopted. Costa and his brothers followed Gira one day and found out that Bobi was still alive and living in the shed.
Costa theorizes that his dad may have missed Bobi in the shed because the brown fur he wore made him blend in. Costa recalled that he and his siblings decided to hide Bobi from their parents for a few weeks until Bobi’s eyes opened.
According to Costa, I’ll admit that they yelled and punished us severely when they found out we were already on to them, but there was a good reason for it. Bobi has continued to prosper and enjoy a long, happy life. Costa claims that his family has never restrained Bobi in any way and that the dog is free to roam the woods and fields near their home.

What did Leonel Costa say about Bobi?
As far as Costa is concerned, Bobi’s long life can be attributed to the fact that he has always eaten human food without seasoning. Costas claims that Bobi, now 30 years old has trouble walking and increasingly poor eyesight. The elderly dog, however continues to take pleasure in each day whether it be resting, hanging out with his feline friends or warming up in front of the fireplace.
Some even speculate that Bobi, the oldest known dog may also be the oldest dog in the history of dogs. Australian cattle dog Bluey born in 1910 held the record for nearly a century before Bobi broke it. Bluey set a new Guinness World Record by living for 29 years and 5 months.
Costa was astounded to find out that his dog had broken two world records but he had always known that Bobi was unique. My father, my brother and my grandparents are no longer with us but whenever I look at Bobi, it’s like they’re back with us again, he said. “Bobi is a symbol for those eras”.
