On Tuesday morning, after months of film festivals, red carpets and speculation, the Academy announced the nominees for the 2023 Academy Awards. After a contentious race that included everything from prestige gems (Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, TR, The Fabelmans) and major blockbusters to late-breaking international dramas like All Quiet on the Western Front, ABC’s televised rollout turned high-profile contenders into Oscar nominees.
All the major categories were dominated by the A24 multiverse epic Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, including Best Picture, Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan), and Best Supporting Actress (Julianne Moore) (Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu).
All Quiet on the Western Front, a German war epic and The Banshees of Inisherin, directed by Martin McDonagh, both received nine nominations each. The latter film’s cast members, Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan, and Kerry Condon, were each nominated for four awards for their performances.
Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick were both nominated for Best Picture, meaning that Tom Cruise, who was passed over for Best Actor, was recognized for his work as a producer on the Top Gun sequel. Best Supporting Actress nominee Angela Bassett made history as the first Marvel movie actor or actress to receive an Oscar nod for her efforts in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Eddie Redmayne and Paul Dano (The Good Nurse, The Fabelmans), Viola Davis (The Woman King), and Danielle Deadwyler (Till) were surprisingly left off the list, but Judd Hirsch (The Fabelmans) and Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie) sprang out of nowhere to steal the spotlight.
The forthcoming ceremony will be broadcast on the network once again, with Jimmy Kimmel reprising his role as host after helming the 2017 and 2018 Oscars. Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner will once again produce the event.
“I can only say that things are progressing. The show will once again focus on cinema, including films from throughout the world and those created by a wide range of artists. The 95th Academy Awards will undoubtedly feature shocking additions to Hollywood’s canon “In September, Academy CEO Bill Kramer hinted at the impending event.
This year’s 95th Academy Awards ceremony will be live on ABC on Sunday, March 12 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. Here is the complete list of 2023 Oscar nominees to tide you over till then.
