A report from Aiken County law enforcement provides details about the events leading up to the Friday death of a toddler. On Friday night, around 9:30, 911 was called to a home on L&L Lane for a report of a youngster who was unresponsive. Alexavia Aguirre, the kid, was found by emergency personnel and was later pronounced dead at Aiken Regional Medical Center according to the coroner, Darryl Ables.
Zay as Alexavia was affectionately known was going to turn two in February. She had no preexisting conditions and was born healthy and cheerful. Alexandra Howell, the mother, contacted News 12 to provide her side of the story, which is how we learned of this. She claims she had recently fled an abusive relationship and had been sleeping at a house on L&L Lane for only a few days when her child suffered a cardiac arrest and died.
The mother reported that they had been out of the house and were driving home when Alexavia fell asleep, as stated in the incident report filed by the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office. The mother claimed that she brought the sleeping child inside and placed her on the bed in the mother’s bedroom.
Alexavia’s mother said she left the room for a moment and when she returned she found her daughter chilly but alive. Howell claimed that she had gotten Alexavia off the bed and onto the floor next to the heater. The homeowner, Marsha, entered and cast her gaze downward at Alexavia. Howell said she noticed Alexavia wasn’t breathing and that her lips had turned a dark color. (as per WRDW) While she called the police Marsha and Howell began performing CPR. She speculated that her toddler had choked on a blue piece of candy.

The mother was transferred to the Aiken County Detention Center at the request of detectives and is currently being held on pending charges of possession of fentanyl, according to the incident report. The presence of fentanyl, according to the sheriff’s office, was the deciding factor.
Howell explained that after having teeth extracted, she applies medication to her gums to alleviate the discomfort and swelling.
“It was not around the baby and was not around the children. It was put up elsewhere, but they did find it when everything happened,” said Howell.
An autopsy of the youngster is scheduled for Tuesday morning in Newberry. The mother and her children’s whereabouts when they were out earlier are also detailed in the report. The mother initially stated in the report that she had brought her second daughter to a hospital in Augusta because she was suffering from headaches, but later recanted and stated that she had taken her daughter to Aiken Regional Medical Center.
The mother initially told the deputy that she had only waited in the waiting room, but then recanted, saying that she had driven there and waited in her car in the parking lot. The child’s death is still being investigated and no one has been arrested.
