Fans of the Netflix series Stranger Things rejoice: Stranger Things 5 has been formally announced as the show’s final season.
The Duffer brothers, the show’s creators, stated in a statement accompanying the announcement of the release date for Stranger Things 4: “Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things. At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but — as you’ll soon see for yourselves — we are now hurtling towards our finale. Season 4 will be the penultimate season; season 5 will be the last.”

Who will return to the cast of Stranger Things 5?
The Stranger Things season 5 cast has not yet been officially announced, but we anticipate that all the surviving main characters will return. This includes the evil Vecna, defeated in the season finale but is undoubtedly planning a comeback.
Here is the complete cast that we anticipate returning for Stranger Things season 5:
- Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers
- David Harbour as Jim Hopper
- Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven/Jane Hopper
- Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler
- Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin Henderson
- Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair
- Noah Schnapp as Will Byers
- Sadie Sink as Max Mayfield
- Natalia Dyer as Nancy Wheeler
- Charlie Heaton as Jonathan Byers
- Joe Keery as Steve Harrington
- Maya Hawke as Robin Buckley
- Brett Gelman as Murray Bauman
- Priah Ferguson as Erica Sinclair
- Paul Reiser as Dr. Sam Owens
- Jamie Campbell Bower as Peter Ballard/Henry Creel/One/Vecna
- Cara Buono as Karen Wheeler
- Eduardo Franco as Argyle
- Gabriella Pizzolo as Susie
Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) and Dr. Brenner (Matthew Modine), who both met their ends in season 4, are two characters who probably won’t return for more.
However, Quinn said how pleased he was with Eddie’s journey.
“I think there’s a great beginning, a great middle and a great end for the character,” he told us.
“And as an actor, you want characters with arcs. So while it would have been great to come back for another season and get together with all those lovely people again, I think it was a brilliantly realized ending for a brilliantly written character.”
Sadie Sink’s Max is someone whose future was left with more significant uncertainty; she is now in a coma, and doctors are unsure if she will ever wake up. But if we had to guess, we’d say that she’ll still be back for season 5 in some capacity.
In the meantime, if Max’s health situation had you nervous coming into the final season, actress Sink’s status is even less specific.
Sink discussed what she learned from the showrunners: “They’ve been very secretive about season five. We did have a conversation. They called me before I read the ninth episode because the script literally says that Max dies. So they called me beforehand and said, ‘just warning you, this is in there, so you’re not truly shocked.”
“I have no idea what’s coming in five and what that looks like. Max’s storyline is very up in the air because she’s in a coma, and Eleven can’t find her in the void. So who knows where she is and what state she’s in.”
Sadie Sink will probably make a comeback, but it’s unclear in what capacity, given that Max remains unconscious. What transpires with her plot will have to be seen.
Naturally, Winona Ryder and David Harbour will be back in action as Joyce and Hopper, a.k.a. Mom and Dad, are now (at last!) a couple.
Hopefully, Cara Buono (Karen Wheeler) and Brett Gelman (Murray) will return. And although his current whereabouts are unclear, it’s feasible that Paul Reiser’s Dr. Owens will appear again. Given that they survived, we might also expect to see Dmitri (played by Tom Wlaschiha) and Yuri (played by Nikola Uriko) return.
In essence, everyone who survived might return in season 5. However, it’s also possible for the deceased to reappear via flashbacks or Vecna’s visions.
The Duffer brothers have also stated that season 5 won’t contain any more new characters. Why they said to IndieWire: “We’re doing our best to resist [adding new characters] for Season 5. We’re trying not to do that so we can focus on the OG characters.”

Will Stranger Things 5 be the final season?
Yes. The fifth season of Stranger Things will be the last one, but the Stranger Things world won’t die with it.
The Duffer brothers stated: “There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new, unexpected heroes.” in a statement addressing the future of the franchise and the release date for season 4.
According to David Harbor in an interview with Collider, season 4 lays the basis for the show’s conclusion: “We’re introducing new stuff, but we’re also tightening and wrapping up in a certain direction. To make it have a clear, clean, specific, and definite ending at some point, which I can’t talk about.”
In a separate interview, producer Shawn Levy stated that he and the Duffer brothers have a clear end goal in mind and that they will soon divulge their strategy: “There is a plan, and that too will be shared not quite as soon as a sense of when season four is coming out, but soon enough.”
He continued: “I can say this. No one’s making it up as we go along, and there is an endgame if you will.”
How many episodes will Stranger Things 5 have?
Season 5’s length won’t be known for a while, but since seasons 1 through 3 had 8 episodes each, while seasons 2 through 4 had nine bouts each, season 5 will probably be roughly the same. Everything depends on how much narrative the Duffer brothers want to include in the season’s conclusion.
Except for the series finale, the episode runs will likely be considerably shorter than those of season 4. The Duffer brothers have stated that the season 5 finale will run “at least two hours,” though not as long as the season 4 finale.
Matt Duffer hinted that the conclusion “will be pretty massive” in another interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
