Vikings ended in late 2020 after a run of almost ten years and nearly one hundred episodes. However, why did the well-liked series end?
Vikings made their History Channel debut in 2013 and quickly rose to the top of the network’s ratings. The series, which followed the legendary Ragnar Lothbrok and his family as they traveled from Scandinavia to the New World, fused myth, fantasy, and truth to produce an epic plot. In its later seasons, the show rose to fame on streaming services, and it ended with its sixth season.
The Vikings had a good ending in late 2020 after roughly 100 episodes. Despite reports to the contrary, this reflected the show’s creator, Michael Hirst, preferences for its duration and conclusion and the toll it took on the showrunner’s personal life. Here’s a look at the program and the events that led to its sixth-season arrival in Valhalla.
What Was the History Channel’s Vikings About?
The early Scandinavian Norsemen’s myths, particularly those of Ragnar Lothbrok, served as the basis for the film Vikings. The series, which followed him and his family, tried to stay as accurate as possible to the historical facts surrounding these individuals and events. At the same time, there were a few instances where the artistic license was used.
This was the case, particularly with personalities like Floki, who was only very loosely based on Hrafna-Flóki Vilgerarson. While maintaining historical accuracy, the program avoided inaccuracies like horned helmets. The wearing of one of these helmets by the character in the sixth season of the show was so absurd as to be satire nearly.
The series, which greatly resembled The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones in its plot and cinematography, sought to imitate the “prestige” television model that had, at the time, found its footing. Due mainly to the fact that it was broadcast on the History Channel of all places, it continued to be successful. Unfortunately for admirers, the Viking era had to end at some point, but it was far more inevitable than some might have thought.

Why Did the Vikings End With Season 6?
The sixth season of Vikings, which debuted in December 2019 and ended a year later, marked the show’s end. The season was divided into two halves, including ten episodes. Hirst claims that he chose this conclusion on his own and not at the request of the History Channel or Prime Video (who streamed the series abroad).
The story’s conclusion would involve the Vikings discovering North America, as Hirst always anticipated. He didn’t want to leave any loose ends for the performers or the audience, so he took the time to bring every character and arc to a reasonable conclusion, given that this would happen in the program’s sixth season.
Additionally, producing the series had become very difficult since the History Channel, initially intended for Vikings to be a miniseries, had doubled the number of episodes per season from 10 to 20. The showrunner had a significant increase in work and stress, which his wife and family also noticed.

He, therefore, stopped the narrative at a natural moment, with Floki arriving in a “new land.” At the same time, various other characters discovered their new situations to prevent burnout from writing the series. There will be more, which is good news for fans who can’t get enough of the Norsemen. The Vikings: The Valhalla television series, which Netflix is producing, will pick up several years after the actual events.
The series, which premieres in February, will follow historical figures like Leif Erikson and others as the Viking era is close. The original series and how it all began with Ragnar Lothbrok will always be remembered by fans, even though this promises to keep the franchise alive for at least a few more years.
