Do you know Who is Velma in Love With? Consider this riddle solved. After years of speculation regarding Velma’s s*xuality, footage from HBO Max’s upcoming Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! denotes that the franchise’s character is a member of the LGBTQ+ community.
In scenes that leaked on social media ahead of the film’s October 16 launch, the animated Velma (voiced by Kate Micucci) becomes clearly embarrassed after meeting Coco Diablo (Myrna Velasco), chief costume designer for a crime organization. The infatuation seems to be mutual: Velma can be seen blushing and her glasses fog up in Coco’s presence, while Coco makes mental notes such as: “Incredible spectacles! ” “Amazing turtleneck! ” “Obviously brilliant! ” “Loves animals! ”

“It honestly did not occur to [me] that we were doing anything so groundbreaking until right now,” Audie Harrison, the film’s director, told NPR over email following the news.
He then continued his remark by seemingly revealing a spoiler. “I honestly thought it was a larger concern for Velma’s character because she is in love with the villain of the movie,” Harrison continued. “The fact that she is a girl is just…well, a fact. That being said, it does feel amazing to be a part of normalizing representation, especially with such a well-known franchise like Scooby-Doo! ”

Creators in the Scooby-Doo orbit have long spoken about showing Velma as a lesbian onscreen. Tony Cervone, a supervising producer of the Mystery Incorporated sitcom, posted on Instagram in 2020, “I’ve said this before, but Velma in Mystery Incorporated is not bi. She’s gay. We always planned on Velma acting a little weird and out of character when she was seeing Shaggy since that relationship was bad for her and she had unspoken difficulty with the why.”

James Gunn, who penned the early-aughts live-action films, stated that his earlier scripts addressed Velma’s s*xuality because he’s “pretty confident she’s gay,” he told the Seattle Times in 2002. “So we had a couple of nods to it in the movie, and in the end, again, they were things that kind of (detracted from) the scenes.”
At long last, Velma is canonically queer—even if she may be falling for the movie’s baddie.
