Early Life
Jeff Goldblum was born in West Homestead, Pennsylvania, on October 22, 1952. His father was Harold Leonard Goldblum and his mother was Shirley Jane Goldblum.
His mother was a radio broadcaster and later she used to run a firm selling kitchen equipment and appliances whereas his father was a medical doctor and major in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He has two siblings, a sister named Pamela, and an older brother named Lee. Goldblum’s other brother named Rick, whom he has called a “kind of hero of mine”, succumbed to death when he was 23 in 1971 when he was en route to Morocco, after contracting dysentery which subsequently resulted in kidney failure.
Goldblum credits Rick’s influence for the interest he developed in jazz music when they were growing up. He has said that the before-time demise of his brother led him to be “more focused” and incorporated a tenacity to “save me and survive”.
When Goldblum was a child, he went to attend an Orthodox synagogue and had a bar mitzvah ceremony. At the age of 17, he relocated to New York City to be an actor.
He initially started to work on the stage and studied acting at the well-known Neighborhood Playhouse under the acting coach Sanford Meisner’s guidance. He debuted on Broadway with the Tony Award-winning musical titled “Two Gentlemen of Verona.” He is also a skilled jazz pianist.
Personal Life
Goldblum was married to Patricia Gaul from 1980 until 1985, and he even made appearances with her in the 1985 film titled “Silverado.” He then got married to Geena Davis in 1987 and the couple divorced in 1991.
Davis was his co-star in the 1985 film titled “Transylvania 6-5000”, the 1986 film named “The Fly”, and the 1988 film “Earth Girls Are Easy.”
In the middle of 2014, he got engaged to Emilie Livingston who is a Canadian Olympic gymnast who is 30 years younger than him. On November 8, 2014, they got married.
In early 2015, he made the announcement on the Late Show with David Letterman that they are expecting their first child, a son. On July 4, 2015, the couple welcomed their son. Later, in early 2017, he confirmed on an episode of Conan that they are expecting their second son and welcomed him in 2017.
Career
Goldblum debuted on Broadway with the musical titled “Two Gentlemen of Verona,” continuing to make his acting break as a drug-addled punk in the 1974 film “Death Wish”. He spent many years waiting for that one step-up role that would get ahead his career to another different level and had significant small parts in the films such as Annie Hall and Nashville.
And eventually, he got the role for which he was looking for with the one he portrayed in the 1983 film titled “The Big Chill,” in which he portrayed the role of a seedy magazine journalist who reunites with his college friends at a funeral.
He went on to feature in some remarkable supporting roles in the movies such as “The Right Stuff,” “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” and the 1984 film “The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension”.
Furthermore, he began to feature in lead roles during the 1980s with the film titled “Into the Dark” and a role that turned him into a star with director David Cronenberg’s 1986 film titled “The Fly”.
The movie brought him extensive critical acclaim in the character of Seth Brundle who is a mad scientist and unknowingly intermixes himself with a housefly.
His other significant box-office hits include Jurassic Park and its follow-up Jurassic Park: The Lost World (continuing to reprise his character in the latter two follow-ups of the franchise titled Jurassic World: the Fallen Kingdom and “Jurassic Park: Dominion”), and also 1996 film titled Independence Day.
He made his name among one the top actors in Hollywood, and appeared as Detective Zach Nichols for seasons 8 and 9 of the crime drama series “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.”
However, later he took a step back to involve himself in lower-profile projects such as the 2002 film titled Igby Goes Down,” and of course, doing this is not at all weird for the nonconforming performer.
Goldblum collaborated with director Wes Anderson in “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou,” in 2004, continuing to reunite with him in 2014 for a film titled “Grand Budapest Hotel” and in 2018 anime film Isle of Dogs.
He joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2017 with the role of The Grandmaster, initially in the follow-up to Guardians of the Galaxy and later yet again in Thor: Ragnarok.
In the early days of their career, he frequently appeared on small screen shows such as Columbo and Starsky and Hutch, and the television film version of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”
He played the character of veteran television comedian Ernie Kovacs in a 1984 TV documentary and has given his unique personality to many shows with cameo roles throughout the years such as The Larry Sanders Show, Sesame Street, King of the Hill, The Simpsons, Mr. Show with Bob and David, and many other projects from comedians Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim, beginning with Tom Goes to the Mayor and appearing in lead roles into “Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job!” In addition to that, Goldblum also appeared many times on the IFC sketch comedy show titled Portlandia, and later in 2019, he had his own biopic show on Disney plus, titled “The World According to Jeff Goldblum.”
The legendary actor has shown his acting skills in many video games throughout the years. He featured in 1996’s Goosebumps: Escape from Horrorland as Count Dracula, and he starred in Call of Duty: Black Ops III in 2015.
Two of his well-known film characters were also reprised by him for video game adaptations: Dr. Ian Malcolm, initially in 1997 Chaos Island: The Lost World and again after over twenty years, in Jurassic World Evolution, and David Levinson in the 1997 Independence Day video game.
As we know about his interests in music, he has stated in many interviews that he could have been involved in music rather than acting since he was young as he is a skilled jazz pianist, and his firstly recorded professionally on the 2001 compilation album titled Hollywood Goes Wild!, that features many film and television actors performing music.
However, it took him more than seventeen years to roll out a proper album of his own together with the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra: 2018’s The Capitol Studios Sessions, and later he released “I Shouldn’t Be Telling You This” in 2019.
