Barcelona vs. Viktoria Plzen: Barcelona’s 2022–23 Champions League campaign ended on a high note after a thrilling 4–2 victory away to Viktoria Plzen in the last group stage match. Very intriguing match in the Czech Republic, as a widely rotated Barça team, didn’t play great football but still had enough chances to score four goals, while Plzen put up a decent fight.
Second Quarter
Aside from controlling possession and tempo early on, Barça also made terrific runs behind the Plzen defense to open up scoring opportunities. They scored early as well, with Marcos Alonso’s tenacious pursuit of the ball leading to a goal after the rebound of an Ansu Fati attempt.
The Blaugrana were unable to keep up their intensity after the opening 15 minutes and Plzen’s reckless and fearless attacking made for a far more exciting game. Barça was really fortunate not to concede an equalizer after the home team struck the crossbar and forced three great saves from Iaki Pea.

While the Catalans were holding off the Plzen pressure, Jordi Alba found Raphinha with a beautiful ball over the top and the Brazilian then set up Ferran Torres for an easy tap-in just before halftime. Initially, the goal was disallowed for offside, but VAR overturned the assistant’s decision and doubled Barcelona’s lead.
While leading by two goals at halftime, Barça’s performance was sloppy; they would need to enhance their game if they were going to close out the win.

Barcelona vs. Viktoria Plzen: Continuation Of The Game
There was a lot of action in the first 20 minutes of the second half, as Plzen, with nothing to lose, pressed forward with all players in an effort to get back into the game and eventually scored when Tomas Chory was hauled down inside the box by Pablo Torre and converted the ensuing penalty.
Immediately, Barça responded by restoring their two-goal lead thanks to a one-two between Ferran and Raphinha inside the box and Torres scoring his second of the night. However, Plzen did not give up and they made it 3-2 when a cross from the left found Chroy unmarked in the six-yard box and he headed it home for his second of the night.
By maintaining possession for longer and passing more cautiously, the Blaugrana were able to stall Plzen’s momentum, but they needed a fourth goal to put the game out of reach. The fourth goal was also spectacular, as Raphinha sent a sublime pass over the top to find the streaking Pablo Torre, who finished superbly for his first goal for the club to make it 4-2.

In the last minutes, Barça was able to run out the clock, but the final whistle sounded, ending Barça’s season in the Champions League. While a third-place finish in the group with seven points was never the goal, the team now has no choice but to push on and try to win the Europa League. We had a terrific time and great performances from guys like Ferran Torres, Pablo Torre and Raphinha made for a successful evening.
